The 82 Honda FT500 is in nice shape. Hard to rip it apart for this project. So by accident I found a second one that some one was parting out. Picked up the whole thing for $600. Will take the parts from this bike and replace whatever is broken on the current bike. Will use the motor in the dirt bike frame. Then will sell the rest of the parts left over on eBay and break even on the cost of all three bikes. Also picked up owners manual and service manual for the ft500.

If anyone has the ascot motor I can scan the repair book and send you a pdf if you want one.

Just saw this thread, or I would have chimed in earlier.

On the wheels, you want a 5-bolt front wheel, 19" X 2.15", identical to the one used by Harley Davidson for their old sportsters, as this is also the bolt pattern associated with most of the 13" Performance Machine Classic Full Floating 2 piece front discs you'll find. Ideally, you want a front wheel already set up for dual discs. Otherwise you'll be machining up a new bearing carrier for one or both sides so that dual discs can be used.

The rear wheel should be 18" X 2.5". You need one set up for a disc brake. I don't know if you could use the one in the link you provided, as it's for a drum rear brake, and I don't know if it's possible to convert this for use with a single rear disc. I believe Jon initially bought one of these and looked into converting it for use with a rear disc, but eventually just bought another wheel already set up for a disc brake.

The disc brake rear wheels made by Harley were all 5-bolt as far as I know. Morris had a universal application wheel used for other makes that were 6-bolt, and this is what the screen-used bikes had, but it really doesn't throw the look off that much to just use a 5-bolt wheel from HD. The 6-bolt wheels are most often found on older Honda CB750s. You can also find 2.5" rear wheels that have a 4-bolt pattern made for Triumphs. Whatever bolt pattern you get for the rear wheel will determine how the brake disk and sprocket will need to be drilled.

So now i have 2 Honda FT500, 500XR & 500XL. I just noticed it looks like the FT500 engine fits in the 500XL but not the 500XR. The engine is part of the frame in the FT500 & 500XL.

The rear wheel I just got on ebay has screws in the rims. I dont think the wheel is going to work with screws in it. Who would do that.

Strange...Could a welding shop plug them up with aluminum welds and then grind the welds level without charging you an arm and a leg? The 18 x 2.5 rear wheels are rare enough that it would be worth looking into.

Worse come to worse, you may be able to plug them yourself with aluminum powder filled epoxy paste and then use a tube in the tire.
